Ceevah Sobel, Los Angeles Aqueduct

This is a project that I had thought about before the trip. I had brought outdoor enamel and large brushes to work with. I had thought to write a message that could be read by people as they drove by on the highway. Because this trip was sponsored by Stanford University, the school representatives became nervous and made me use the side hidden from the highway. I thought to write, "It is not dry here" or "This is not really desert." or "Western Folly"...but decided that the single word HUBRIS said it all. By limiting myself to one choice word, it could be large enough in the limited painting time to relate to the scale of the aqueduct and the landscape.
